Bert Nordberg, chief executive of smartphone manufacturer Sony Ericsson, dropped several tantalizing tidbits about the possibility of a gaming phone from the company in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal. Nordberg also hinted at a further, splashier announcement to come at a February conference in Spain.

"There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere," Nordberg told the WSJ.

The Journal also cites an anonymous source claiming that the phone will likely be branded under Sony Ericsson's Xperia label, and that it will run Google's Android smartphone OS. The Android speculation (which has come up before) is interesting; it could be an indication that the rumored "PlayStation Phone" will simply be a gaming-oriented phone that doesn't seek to become a platform on its own. Nordberg told the Journal that current touchscreen devices are not "optimized for games," which could support this idea.
