Former Sony Exec Envisions One Console Future
Apparently former Sony Computer Entertainment deputy president David Reeves has completely forgotten the basic tenets of capitalism.
Given the high cost of developing for multiple platforms, Reeves told CVG he envisions a world full of rainbows and unicorns where Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft suddenly decide to work together just to help out the money bleeding publishers. "When you're on the first-party side, you realize how really, really expensive it is to develop a platform," he said. "Whether it's PS3, Xbox 360, or even Wii, they cost millions - maybe not billions, but absolutely millions. You don't know when to put that stake in the ground of technology and move on. You know, say 'that's enough'. Eventually, it may just become so expensive to develop that Microsoft and Sony say, 'Okay, let's get together.' I'd say it's between 10 and 15 years away. That's how long I think it will take. I don't think it will be the next console cycle, but probably the next cycle after that, where you might have something platform-agnostic.
Reeves left room in his fantasy world for different partnerships as well, saying "But it might be different players, of course. It might be Google getting together with, dare I say, Microsoft, or Google with somebody else."
I'm sure Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are chomping at the bit to create this one console to rule them all. Sony is a multinational conglomerate that also makes expensive consumer electronics, owns a Hollywood studio, and still has a hold in the struggling music business; Nintendo is a bottom line driven company that forgoes expensive new technologies in favor of mass market appeal and low prince points; Microsoft's entertainment division is a tiny fraction of a company that is up to its neck in competition with the likes of Google and Apple across the cloud computing, mobile computing, enterprise computing, and dwindling desktop computing sectors. These companies already sound so much alike. Whatever could go wrong?!
That said, it would be nice to need only one console to play Super Mario Bros, Halo, and God of War.
