THQ Wants To Charge You Less For Games

Do you think The Man is trying to keep you down by charging too much for games? Then you'll appreciate a new strategy being adopted by publisher THQ that will see cheaper games on the shelves and more DLC released over time.

At the BMO Capital Markets conference, THQ president Brian Farrell explained how lower prices might help the company in the long run. "What we're thinking about the business is we're turning it on its head a little bit," he said. "It's not, 'how high a price can we get', but 'how many users.'"

Farrell explained that the publisher's MX vs. ATV title sold considerably better when it dropped to a "mass-market friendly" $39.99 price point. He thinks that, if a game releases at that price initially, more gamers will get in on the ground floor, and the company can then sell optional downloadable content to the users who want to broaden the experience.

"We think this is the future of gaming," Farrell said. "We think that's the way games are gonna go in the long term."
