House Of The Dead: Overkill Sequel Rumored

by Adam Biessener on Nov 10, 2010 at 07:28 AM

Hook it up, Sega. I don't know how to put this into any stronger words: This would be the best possible thing you could do. Ever.

The best light gun shooter game ever could be getting a sequel. NintendoLife is crediting unnamed "sources close to Sega" as saying that House of the Dead: Overkill 2 is "well under way" for a mid-2011 release.

No platforms have been announced, though Wii and perhaps PlayStation Move are the obvious guesses. The story doesn't say anything about original developer Headstrong Games returning or not. The first game's magic is so closely tied to the cleverly vulgar writing and '70s schlock-horror presentation that moving a sequel to a different developer would be madness of the first order.

If you haven't played the first one, do so. It's the Joe Mauer of rail shooters. I spent an afternoon driving all over town to track down a copy, found apparently the last one in the Twin Cities used for $40, and dropped another $30 on stupid gun peripherals for my Wii – and it's the best gaming purchase I've made in years.

The gameplay itself is well-executed classic light gun shooter stuff, but the presentation is the key here. House of the Dead: Overkill is mature in a cursing, misogynistic sort of way, but the comedic timing and pitch-perfect dialogue make it a must-play for anyone over the age of 18.

I'm not joking about the hard M rating, either. This game is emphatically not for kids.

I would do embarrassing things just for an HD remake of the first game on PS3 with Move support. A full-on sequel would be...happiness, distilled into its purest form.
