Downloadable Content For PS3 Now Available At GameStop

by Jeff Marchiafava on Nov 09, 2010 at 08:29 AM

Today Sony and GameStop announced a new partnership that will allow players to purchase DLC for PlayStation 3 games and full downloadable PSN titles from their local GameStop.

The program has started in select GameStop stores, though the retailer expects to quickly expand the number of participating locations. The content ranges from add-on packs to full-on PSN games.

This looks like a move to get consumers confused by the magical world of downloadable content in the door, so to speak. As far as we can tell, there's no point to purchasing a voucher code at a retailer rather than simply buying that same content through the PlayStation Store on your PS3 – especially since Sony uses real currency and allows customers to purchase items with correct change instead of forcing everyone into a carnival ticket scam like certain other platform holders.

It will be interesting to see if other brick-and-mortar retailers begin similar partnerships with online content providers.

[Full disclosure: GameStop is the parent company of Game Informer.]
