Media Molecule Sheds Light On Birth of Sackboy

by Matt Bertz on Nov 08, 2010 at 11:22 AM

Walk through the creation of Sony's adorable mascot with Media Molecule as the dev team spills the beans on Sackboy's origin.

In honor of the two-year anniversary of LittleBigPlanet, the latest entry to the Media Molecule blog offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the early stages of development. Before the Molecules nailed the undeniably cute design of its popular mascot, Sackboy was originally known as YellowHead. Though YellowHead didn't make the final cut, the development team was immediately smitten with the early design concept that eventually evolved into the recognizable mascot.

"I think it was the cheekiness," recalls art director Kareem Ettouney. "Dave [Smith] always does that, pays attention to personality and very subtle things. When YellowHead was pulling the big old rock, the character looked like he was straining, even though there was no supporting animation… his little debug arms stretching as he pulled."
