Square Believes Final Fantasy XIV Players Will Return As Game Improves

by Phil Kollar on Nov 05, 2010 at 12:30 PM

If you've read my impressions of Final Fantasy XIV following the new MMO's launch back in September, you probably know that the game had a number of major problems holding it back from greatness. It sounds like Square is aware of these problems and hopeful that players won't abandon the game for good as they work to fix them.

Kotaku is reporting some interesting quotes from Square Enix president Yoichi Wada, who readily admitted that FF XIV "isn't satisfactory" in its current form. Wada said that the publisher is working to "quickly [improve] it" and "win back players' trust."

Final Fantasy XIV has shipped 630,000 copies, a respectable early number considering that it's currently only available on the PC. However, as an ongoing service, Square is relying on subscription fees to keep the game going, and many disappointed gamers have been abandoning the service. Wada believes, "The players who left will return if we satisfy them."

For my own part, I saw a lot of potential in Final Fantasy XIV, and the speed at which Square has been addressing problems with the game is fairly impressive. It doesn't forgive the dismal state it launched in, but I can definitely be counted among the number that will give it another chance if things get significantly polished in the future.
