UPDATE: DOS On iPhone Was (Briefly) A Go

by Adam Biessener on Oct 26, 2010 at 03:45 PM

UPDATE: Just as quickly as it appeared, this wonderful app has been taken away from us. iDOS has been pulled from the App Store. Here's hoping it returns one day.

ORIGINAL STORY: I repeat, Apple has greenlit fully featured DOS emulator iDOS for distribution through its iTunes store. You could be Zorking on the train right now.

Based on the venerable and much-loved DOSBox (the freeware program that any retro PC gamer is intimately familiar with, and the solution that allows Good Old Games to run older software with such success on modern PCs), iDOS is a fully featured emulator that runs just about any DOS code you throw at it.

You can even install Windows 3.0 on your iPad. This thing is serious.

iDOS is available through the iTunes store for a buck, and it's a simple process to get your old DOS games or other software from your PC onto your iOS device.

Happy gaming, and look out for the Grue.
