Shenmue Finally Gets A Sequel…Sort Of

by Ben Reeves on Oct 07, 2010 at 01:50 PM

Fanboys keep a paper bag handy because you might start hyperventilating. Shenmue – Sega’s experimental open-world epic about a boy on a quest to avenge his father – might finally be getting a sequel this winter, but it’s probably not what you were hoping for.

Shenue was originally planned to be a multi-part epic spanning at least five titles, but since Shenmue II released on Xbox back in 2000, Shenmue fans have been left hanging.

Young Ryo Hazuki's tale might not be over, however. Earlier today, Yahoo! Japan and the Japanese-based web service provider, DeNA, announced a partnership to develop a new community-based Internet game portal. The companies also announced that one of the first titles for the service would be a new Shenmue game. Titled Shenmue Machi (which translates into Shenmue Town), this title is being planned as a new kind of “social game.” Whatever that means.

We’re actually interested to hear more about this title, so we’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.
