Study Says: A Lot Of Dudes Hurt Themselves Playing Games

by Matt Helgeson on Oct 05, 2010 at 12:25 PM

Researchers Patrick O'Toole, Robert Miller, and John Flynn gave a presentation to the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference confirming something that YouTube has know for a while: a lot of people get hurt playing video games.

Men are more likely to injure themselves gaming than woman at a rate of 49 percent to 42 percent. The most common injuries were to the shoulder, ankle, and foot. The majority of these were bruises or strains. In addition, bystanders -- especially those under 10 -- were "significantly" more likely to be injured in motion-control gaming sessions.

The weirdest part? Of the 692 game-related injuries in the study, only 92 were from motion-controlled gaming like the Wii. This means that somehow the vast majority of those studied managed to injure themselves playing traditional controller based games. What the hell?

Be careful out there, people.
