Final Fantasy XIV Collector's Edition Unboxing

by Phil Kollar on Sep 22, 2010 at 10:05 AM

If you're not willing to sink the extra dough on Final Fantasy XIV's Collector's Edition, you won't be able to play the game until next week. We're impatient, though, so we ripped open our Collector's Edition copies as soon as they showed up at the office today. Here's what we found inside.

This info sheet on the back of the box lets us know what to expect. Let's dig in.

Here's the DVD case! Inside there are two discs -- one game disc and one "Making of" DVD -- a manual, and a 30-day buddy pass for giving a trial of the game to a friend.

The back of the box gives minimum and recommended specs and advertises some of the game's mechanics. The Armoury System, which allows you to switch classes by changing your weapons, is genuinely pretty cool. The Guildleve system, on the other hand, was still a bit confusing and weird as of open beta.

This classy-looking "travel journal" is mostly blank for your writing purposes, but there are a few pages of concept art in the back. I'll be using it to take notes for work!

The Collector's Edition of FF XIV is packaged with a security token that will look similar to many World of Warcraft players. Basically, you can tie this to your account for added security. In addition to your regular password, every time you log in, you'll hit the button on this token, and it will provide you with a six-digit number to enter. It may sound like an added pain, but it's pretty useful for keeping your account from getting hacked.

And here's the full set! In addition to the physical items pictured here, the Collector's Edition includes an Onion Helm in-game item and a voucher to receive a physical "right of passage" for your character, which is essentially a fake birth certificate.

So there's the Final Fantasy XIV Collector's Edition! Anyone else pick this up or planning to?
