Bungie Crafting New Engine For Post-Reach Project

by Bryan Vore on Sep 14, 2010 at 07:50 AM

Bungie's got a quite a lot going on right now. Halo: Reach just launched today, the employees are in the midst of moving to a brand new office space, and the studio is building an engine from scratch for its ambitious new IP it's publishing with Activision.

In a lengthy interview with Develop, community director Brian Jarrard spoke of Bungie's past and future. When asked about a new engine, he replied: "Yeah, it’s actually in development, so I would say it’s in a stage where, technically we’re still at the end of a pre-production mode. But now that Reach is done the full weight of our team is rolling into the project. Real work is underway."

"Yeah and I think it goes hand-in-hand with our independent spirit," Jarrard continues. "Just like we don’t want to develop a game off someone else’s IP, we want to push our own technology in the same way. That’s going to be our position for the foreseeable future."
