No Extra Charges For Black Ops

by Nick Ahrens on Sep 10, 2010 at 10:30 AM

Over the last year, we’ve seen more and more companies devise alternate means of making money off of games to off-set the money publishers say is lost on used games. Whether it’s EA Sports’ Online Pass or the VIP codes for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, companies like Electronic Arts have implemented new systems to earn revenue. But Mark Lamia of Treyarch, the developer behind Call of Duty: Black-Ops, has a different idea on how to accomplish this.

“I want to take that in the other direction and bring consumers really great reasons to keep their games, rather than trade them in,” Lamia explains to MCV. “We’re going to support the hell out of Black Ops. That will be our focus post-release: making sure we keep our fans engaged, and hopefully as a result, they’ll want to keep playing our game and won’t want to trade it in.”

Clearly the heated discussion of used games versus new games will continue to burn probably until the entire gaming world is digital download only. As for the possibility of an added charge for multiplayer in Black-Ops?

“You won’t see that for Black Ops. The multiplayer comes with the game you buy – you don’t have to do anything else for that.”
