Square Enix Working On New AAA Title

by Tim Turi on Sep 07, 2010 at 07:12 AM

Yosuke Shiokawa and Yuki Matsuzawa, developers at Square Enix in Japan, recently revealed they are working on a new title with America, then promptly shared their disappointment in Western games.

In a presentation titled “First Time Japanese American Joint Development: Observation on our experience of taking direction from both countries” at CESA Developers conference in Japan, Shiokaway and Matsuzawa revealed they are hard at work on a “AAA title” being co-developed by Japan and America. They also make the promise of a lofty metacritic score of over 90.

Any excitement roused by this revelation is quickly squelched by the developers’ open disapproval of Western games. The duo chalked it up to American games’ focus on realism and believability. They point to the old, weathered, muscle-bound soldier stereotype as evidence that Western developers strive to have gamers “suspend disbelief” by offering heroes that could feasibly save the world.

Not everything was fire and brimstone from Yosuke Shiokawa and Yuki Matsuzawa. They applaud American games’ efficient game production, and admit that Japanese developers must make their game worlds more believable in order to resonate with Western audiences.

Hopefully Square Enix’s big upcoming title breaks the publisher’s jaded beliefs.
