Today's PlayStation 3 firmware update 3.42 doesn't seem to do much of anything, unless you're using PS Jailbreak or PSGroove. Then you'll notice that they don't work anymore.
Sony has been battling PS Jailbreak in courts worldwide, but now it's fighting on the firmware side. This USB stick that sells for roughly $140 allows people to play pirated games without altering their console's hardware. PSGroove, on the other hand, is open source software that can be used to play homebrew games in addition to pirated titles.
According to BBC News, the new update blocks both of these applications. Sony also offered the following statement to BBC: "Since this is an overall security related issue, we will not be providing further commentary to this case. But as we always have, we will continue to take necessary actions to both hardware and software to protect the intellectual content provided on the PlayStation 3."
