Microsoft Remembers PC Gamers, Announces Age of Empires Online

by Matt Bertz on Aug 17, 2010 at 06:55 AM

Remember when Microsoft made PC Games? Ah, the glory days. Even though Redmond has largely abandoned its Games for Windows endeavors and dissolved the talented team at Ensemble Studios, it's going ahead with a new Age of Empires game.

The studio formed out of the ashes of Ensemble, Robot Entertainment, is developing the game. Age of Empires Online takes the franchise's classic real-time strategy formula and blends it with the new hotness that is social network gaming. You know, real-time Farmville with persistent Greek civilizations, levelling up, and multliplayer. As with all games aimed at a broader audience, Age of Empires Online features a kitschy cartoon art style.

The free to play game runs via Windows For Windows Live (remember that?!) . You can visit the official Age of Empires Online website to sign up for the beta.
