Better Late Than Never?

by Jeff Cork on Aug 01, 2010 at 10:04 AM

We got early copies of Castlevania HD last week, and I had every intention on hunkering down and playing it for hours--but then a funny thing happened. Somewhere between the first and second chapter, I started feeling guilty about one of my secret gaming shames: I've never beaten Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I played it for a little while when it first came out, and I downloaded the Xbox Live Arcade port years later with every intention of completing it, but other things got in the way. (One of them being my easily distracted nature.)

Anyway, I put Castlevania HD on hold last night and started a new game of Symphony of the Night. I'm not going to let myself play Castlevania HD until I see Symphony's end credits. The fact that HD is all kinds of awesome is definitely lighting a fire under my heels, too.

I'm definitely going to appreciate a lot of the references in Castlevania HD when I get to it again. You know, things like enemies, tilesets, and items. That got me thinking about something. When you guys decide to tackle a series that's been out for a while, do you like to start from the beginning, or are you content to take off with the latest installment? If you don't play the older stuff, do you feel like you're missing anything important? Do you find sneaky ways around it, like watching YouTube videos or talking about the games with your friends? Or do you feel obligated to power through earlier games in order?

What's your take on picking up on game series?

(And yes, I know Symphony of the Night wasn't the first Castlevania. It's just a game that got me thinking.)
