One of the world's largest video game publishers is working with the world's premier purveyor of virtual items in games.

Live Gamer creates an ecosystem for publishers to include virtual goods into their games. By introducing the ability to include a virtual economy into a game, Live Gamer frees developers up to work on game creation, while largely offloading the processes involved in microtransaction logistics to a different party. The idea of microtransactions has a lot of advantages for a publisher, including the prevention of piracy, continued revenue from an existing property, and the ability to charge less for a game, or even introduce a game to the public for free.

The EA partnership is the third major deal announced by Live Gamer in the last week. Recently, THQ and Real Networks also came on board with Live Gamer through similar deals.

What's the takeaway? Gamers should expect to see a lot more of Live Gamer and other similar companies in the coming years, as microtransactions start to become more and more common.
