Microsoft Games Segment Annual Profits And Q4 Losses Both Rise

by Adam Biessener on Jul 22, 2010 at 12:54 PM

Microsoft's latest financial statement announced a year-over-year increase in fourth quarter losses from $141 million to $172 million for its games division in 2009, while it stayed in the black for the year overall as year-over-year profits exploded from $108 million to $679 million.

The company ascribed its fourth-quarter stumble to an increase in operating expenses tied to marketing and development of the Xbox 360. The big jump in annual profits was linked to reduced Xbox 360 manufacturing costs in the earnings report.

The corporation was up overall for the fourth quarter, with $4.5 billion in profit to its name coming off of $13 billion in revenues.

You see what happens when you release a good product (Windows 7) instead of a crappy one (um, pretty much every other Windows build except XP SP2)?
