BioWare Hints At Future Projects

by Matt Miller on Jul 15, 2010 at 11:45 AM

Greg Zeschuk, one of the co-founders of the famed RPG developer BioWare, spoke about the company's future at this year's Develop conference in Brighton, England.

During his keynote at the conference, the studio head implied that BioWare will be exploring a number of new directions as the company moves into the future. "The future isn't necessarily on console. That's the past. It's going to be a strong thing going forward, but the future is in all of these new businesses that are starting up. There will be some stuff you'll see down the road, within the next year, that shows what we're doing in that regard."

What sort of stuff? Zeschuk suggested that the company is exploring a number of options, most notably smaller projects. "We're obviously working on Star Wars: The Old Republic, a big MMO. But we're working on smaller MMO type game games across the group - things all over the space."

In an interview with Eurogamer after the show, Zeschuk clarified his thoughts. "We want to expand because, you look at what kids are playing on. Kids are playing on iPhones and iPads. The 3DS looks pretty amazing. All these platform options, we want to be touching on all those. We did one DS game. We actually had another DS game in development at one point but decided to hold off on that and look at iPhone instead."

Zeschuk was quick to point out that BioWare will continue to work on the "giant stuff" that the company is known for. But it's interesting to hear that even BioWare is interested in exploring some more casual and short form directions with their upcoming projects.
