Might & Magic Clash Of Heroes Is One To Watch

by Matt Miller on Jun 16, 2010 at 09:20 PM

The cult DS hit is coming to XBLA and PSN, and it's even better in high definition.

We got a chance on the E3 show floor to dive into a match of Clash of Heroes, and confirmed our suspicions that this may be one of the great downloadable titles releasing this year. The same team that created the DS version last year is hard at work crafting the downloadable version, and they've kept almost all of the original gameplay intact. However, the game's art assets have been completely overhauled in favor of completely hand-animated art. The results are spectacular, bringing the game to new life on the big consoles.

For those unfamiliar with the original game, Clash of Heroes mixes a RPG-lite fantasy story progression with an engaging tactical puzzle battle system that is hard to put down. Riffing off of the match-three concept found in games like Bejeweled and Puzzle Quest, Clash of Heroes demands that players deploy troops in battle and match them into squads of three or more allies in order to attack the enemies. Vertical formations create attack groups, and horizontal formations create defensive walls. The turn-based action flips back and forth between the player and the enemy, so you can always see your opponents actions and plan defenses and counterattacks accordingly. On top of the basic gameplay, a system of chaining and linking attacks adds an additional strategic layer.

Outside the battle, you'll take one of several heroes (you play them all through the course of the campaign) through an adventure gathering unique troop types and completing main and side missions throughout the world. The story is pretty familiar fantasy fare, but the rich visual tapestry of the game's art helps to bring the setting to life.

The new high-definition downloadable title will add 2 vs. 2 multiplayer battles, which should make for a cool change of pace. Players will also be able to play the same type of match cooperatively against the computer AI.

Might & Magic Clash of Heroes has some great potential, and it's likely that the game is only a couple months from launch, though a final release date has yet to be nailed down by publisher Ubisoft. Especially if you haven't already tried the game on the Nintendo DS, keep an eye out for this one. More immediately, you can also check out the game's trailer right here.
