Sony's E3 Presentation Coming At You Live
We're at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. waiting for the final press conference of the day. It should be a big one, too. Sony will be using their time to talk about 3D displays, the upcoming Move peripheral, and more.
Watch the Sony press conference live here
And we're off....
After a big-ol montage video, Jack Tretton is taking the stage. He's talking about the PlayStation 3, oddly enough. He says it's the only console built for everyone in the family.
Kaz Hirai is now talking about 3D, and how Sony is at the forefront of the technology. Wouldn't you know it, the PlayStation 3 is a big part of that? As part of their push, the PS3 is 3D ready.
Killzone is the first game Sony's showing off, and it's been built with 3D specifically in mind.
We're in a frozen area with vertigo-inducing cliffs. Our character hops across towering rock platforms using a jetpack and makes his way into a base. The jetpack looks to be fully functional, with later parts taking place in the air, pulsing the jets on and off to stay aloft.
Gran Turismo 5 is going to be in 3D. Maybe that's what's been taking so long...
It's now apparently time for another montage video. This one's got some pretty good gameplay footage of a bunch of games, including the new Motorstorm.
Jack is talking about the upcoming 10th anniversary for the PS2, which is a pretty impressive milestone. PS3 players are connecting their PS3s online to do more than play games, he says. People are downloading movies and TV shows, too.
Aha! Now we're talking about Move. Tretton says that what sets Move apart from other products is the level of precision it offers.
Peter Dille is here, and he's talking about how Move and 3D are redefining a four-year-old console. Regarding Move specifically, Move offers something that's rewarding and challenging to core players. A montage shows off some devs and how they're stoked about the technology. It's peppered with Kevin Butler ads, which is a big hit with the audience.
Uh oh. Sony's taking a swipe at Microsoft's Kinect by pointing out that Move has buttons. With buttons come added precision, Dille says. Games can be tailored for Move and regular inputs, and developers can pack Blu-ray discs with both versions.
We're getting a look at a game starring a magical apprentice. Using the Move, players can cast spells such as frost or firebolt. The apprentice can also turn into a rat.
Fire can be used to blast goblins or create protective fire barriers. Broken bridges can be repaired using a mending spell. Oh god, huge golem out of nowhere!
Next up is a look at the Move version of Tiger Woods golf.
It looks like a golf game, which...is not surprising. The visuals are an upgrade from the Wii version of the game, though it looks like it provides the same experience as players have been enjoying with Wii MotionPlus.
After a few shots, the presenter makes par. Good for him. I knew he could do it!
Move support for Tiger will be available as a download and also as a demo on the Move disc.
A new game called Heroes on the Move (working title) unites characters from Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper in a game that's filled with motion controls.
Kevin Butler is here. (You know, the guy from the PlayStation ads?) He looks much smaller in real life.
He loves gaming, as he says. Making gaming more accessible with Move is good news for the hardcore. Yikes! He's riling up the crowd with a big ol' cheer. Move brings a whole lot more to the table, because everyone is a true game. We all serve one master he says. His name is Gaming, and forever may he reign. So there.
Move details ahoy! The Move controller is shipping in North America on Sept. 19. It'll cost $49 for the Move and $29 for the navigation subcontroller. A bundle will be available for $99 that includes a PlayStation Eye camera, the Move and navigation controllers and a sports game. Other games will be priced at $39.
Another montage video! Have some pics!
Where's the PSP stuff? Sony hasn't forgotten about its portable. Sony showed off a new Kevin Butler ad and a new PSP spokesman. Oh yeah, God of War: Ghosts of Sparta.
Dille says it'll be joined by a portable ModNation Racers game and 70 other PSP titles before December. Wow.
Dille is talking about PlayStation Home. If you can't make it to E3, he says you can check out the Sony booth in Home. It's supposed to be a solid recreation. We'll have to check it out when we can.
Now Media Molecule is giving us the rundown on LittleBigPlanet 2. It's staying true to the Play, Create, Share ethos. In the sequel, it's supposed to be a platform for games in general, not just platforming levels.
One of the games shown is like a simple Guitar Hero, with four players frantically trying to hit x and o buttons at the increasingly fast prompts. Another game has players bounce into each other, knocking them into a hazardous barrier.
We see a few more games, including shooting galleries, complicated shooters, and boxing games.
Aha. It's time to talk about PlayStation Plus, a paid version of the PlayStation Network. Members get early access to betas and free themes, Minis, maps, and automatic downloads. It's content that users will own for the duration of their subscription. When it runs out, does that mean you lose those things? We'll have to get some answers on that one...
EA's John Schappert is here, and he's showing off the new Medal of Honor game. It's a live demo! Here's a look at a new multiplayer map set in an Afghanistan valley. Lots of shooting and explosions. The character animations look a bit rough, particularly the running. Oh well.
The game's coming out October 12. Now it's a Dead Space 2 demo. Poor Isaac is being tossed around like a doll by a huge multilimbed necromorph. And now he's getting sucked into space. And the thing is following him and there's an explosion and I need a few minutes. Sorry.
Hey, it's GladOS! Portal 2. Gabe Newell is on stage. He's kind of a PS3 smack-talker, so it's funny to see him here. As he's now talking about.
The PS3 version is going to be the best one on consoles, Newell says.
And a look at Final Fantasy XIV, Square's latest MMO. Lots of bows in here. And meaningful glances. Not much in the way of combat or story, but it's better than nothing.
Mafia II is getting some exclusive content on day one. Take that, Microsoft.
Ubisoft is taking the stage now, with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The beta for its multiplayer is exclusive to the PS3. And here's a look at it. An assassin walks past a woman on a bench, who morphs into a masked assassin. He rushes behind the first and takes him out with an ax. From above, another springs down to the ground and takes out the second assassin. That's a whole lot of assassination.
And it's yet another montage video. I think we're just about done. Whew.
No Last Guardian though? Odd.
False alarm. Here's some Gran Turismo 5 action. Sony says we'll be getting our hands on it "soon." Does that mean a release date is finally coming?
Did I hear November 2? Yeah, I did.
Infamous 2! Looks good! we should do a cover story on that one sometime.
Boom! TWISTED METAL!!!
Sweet Tooth just drove his ice-cream truck on stage. I AM INHALING HIS EXHAUST RIGHT NOW! OK, I'll settle down. Those games were fun, that's all. There's a helicopter in the game. The game is coming out in 2011, and it's being developed by series vets.
A new mode, called Twisted Metal Nuke is a faction-based battle, with members of Sweet Tooth's and Doll Face's minions battling it out. There are more factions that will be rolled out later. Partners can team up in the same vehicle, adding support.
And with that, we're done. Thanks for checking us out! We'll have news and updates throughout the rest of E3, so stay tuned to Game Informer Online.
