e3 2010

If Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier is flying under your radar, it may either be because you’re a fool or because it has stealth camouflage activated. After seeing this game in action during Ubisoft’s press conference at E3 today, I’m a believer. The trailer and gunplay shown combines visceral first-person gunplay with tactical, team-based stealth.

Front and center during the trailer was the future soldier’s *** new weaponry. The cross-com radar highlights enemies on the radar for easy stealth maneuvering. Powerful smart ammunition technology rips through three target dummies with a single bullet. Further escalating the awesome arsenal is the shoulder-mounted rocket launcher, delivering three missiles that will make Predator fans drool. Not all the tools seem realistic as of now, but the development team claims they are working with military organizations and agencies to learn their future research and development plans.

The most useful tool is definitely the soldiers’ cloaking. Players can go stealth at will, allowing them to sneak up on unsuspecting foes and deliver a single bullet to the back of the head. During gameplay video we watched the player character walk around the battlefield unhindered, free to position wherever they please. In one instance the player stealth killed a guard and propped up his body until a fellow guard passed, effectively fooling the sentry. The coup de grace for the cloak section showed the cloaked Spec Ops squad simultaneously take out three guards while fluidly incapacitating a mark they wanted alive.

The other section of the game showed a sniper take out a helicopter pilot. While this alone has been done before, what tickled me was the vehicle the chopper was transporting wrecking the enemy base while the bird went down. After that we saw a lone soldier take cover behind an old canoe while being assaulted by robot akin to a Metal Gear Solid enemy. It was basically a mechanized mini-gun on treads, delivering tons of destruction. That’s where the demo ended.

As far as a release date, we only have “soon” to go on. Look for it on PC, PS3, 360, Wii, DS, and PSP.
