EA Sports Predicts Spain to Win World Cup

by Matthew Kato on Jun 03, 2010 at 09:30 AM

EA Sports has used 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa to sim the soccer tournament, and it's determined that Spain will walk away with the trophy and its first World Cup.

Spain defeats Brazil 3-1, but it wasn't a romp. After going down a goal in the 30th minute courtesy of Brazil's Felipe Melo, Spain rallied as David Villa netted the equalizer before the halftime whistle. Villa would score again to put Spain ahead, and victory was all but assured when Cesc Fabregas scored off a counter-attack after a furious Brazilian attack.

Spain took first place in its group, and easily handled Portugal before beating Italy on penalties in the quarters and besting Argentina to earn a birth in the Final. Brazil also led its group, and beat Chile, the Netherlands, and England before taking on Spain.

There was little drama coming out of the group stages, with the U.S. taking second place after losing to England 2-1 but beating Slovakia and Nigeria. The U.S. team fell in the round of 16, however, at the hands of the Germans in a shootout. Perhaps the only surprise was the fact that host nation South Africa became the first country not to advance out of the group stage when hosting the World Cup.
