HBO Coming To A PS3 Near You

by Tim Turi on May 25, 2010 at 09:02 AM

Sony’s plethora of downloadable movies and TV shows is about to expand. The company is currently working out a deal with Time Warner to spread its premium cable channel's content to the PlayStation 3. Look forward to downloading Big Love, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, and more right to your system. Just like any premium content, HBO shows will cost you.

Approximately 47 million PlayStation 3 users exist in the world. With this large number in mind, it makes sense that Sony is working to collaborate with companies like it did with Netflix and Comedy Central to enhance the allure of the PS3 as a one-stop media hub. PlayStation’s chief executive, Jack Tretton, is particularly excited. "HBO is a high-profile content provider, and a real premium service, so we think this really reinforces that the PlayStation is more than just a video game console now," he said.

Again, this is premium content, so expect to pay for it. An episode of a hit HBO show like True Blood will run you $3.99 a pop. With most downloadable shows on the PS3 running at $.99, this price is rather steep. Eager HBO fans will also have to wait roughly 11 months after a season ends to download it, because HBO shows will hit the downloadable scene the same time as DVD and Blu-ray box sets. HBO doesn't want to release the shows on the PS3 immediately after they air so as not to undercut its paid subscription base.

The launch date for HBO on PS3 hasn't been announced, but we’ll let you know when it surfaces.
