Fire Emblem 3 Remake On Its Way To DS

by Adam Biessener on May 25, 2010 at 11:28 AM

Nintendo has released a Japanese trailer (embedded below) for what appears to be an upcoming DS remake of the third Fire Emblem game, which originally appeared on Japan's 16-bit Super Famicom in 1994. There has been no announcement of a U.S. release yet, but it's a safe bet – we've gotten all of the Fire Emblems for years now, and there is no reason to believe that this would be any different.

This seems to be a DS version of Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo, which was itself part remake. The first entry on Super Famicom, this third game in the series was half a remake of the Famicom original. Japan-centric blog Andriasang, which first reported this news, notes that as the first Fire Emblem game was already remade on DS (2009's Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon), this new title will likely focus on the original content present in its source materiel. Sounds about right.

As much of a strategy/RPG fan as I am, the prospect of playing yet another Fire Emblem remake doesn't do a whole lot for me. The series is held together by a boatload of hoary design clichés. Weapons that degrade from use require an unfortunate amount of micromanagement to deal with, and odd balancing paradigm encourages players to not use their more powerful characters early on -- even when those heroes can practically clear missions on their own. Fire Emblem is nicely challenging, which is a rarity all too often these days. Let's hope this remake adds something to the staling formula.
