Zombie Czar George Romero Wants To Make A Game

by Tim Turi on May 07, 2010 at 08:15 AM

George Romero single-handedly infected America with the modern zombie. His contribution to the living dead has indirectly impacted video games in a big way, and without him Resident Evil, Zombie Nazis, Dead Rising, Plants vs. Zombies, and Left 4 Dead simply wouldn’t exist. Despite his influence in all things brain-eating, he’s never made a video game. He wants that to change.

During a recent discussion with Destructoid, Romero explained that he doesn’t play many games, but he’s willing to work with a gamer on a video game project. He wants a more hands-on role in game development than offered by potential partners in the past. "But everyone who has ever approached me, it's always been ... sell us your name and go home,” said Romero. “I don't particularly want to do that."

Thinking back on how the Romero-branded PC game, City of the Dead turned out, I think that’s a pretty good philosophy.

A long time ago Romero worked on a Resident Evil movie script which was ultimately scrapped. However, he said he “had a lot of great ideas" for a game while watching an assistant play Resident Evil. "I'm not a gamer, so I don't know," said Romero. "What excites a gamer? I don't know. I think I could come up with a good story, and good situations -- places to hide sh*t ... We'll see what happens."

If you’re still doubting Romero’s influence on games, look no further than the Dead Rising boxart. They pay such close tribute to Dawn of the Dead that Capcom needed to post a disclaimer on the product. In fact, Romero says that he's actually been in talks with Capcom about making a game with them. His history with the company is undeniable, considering he also directed commercials for Resident Evil 2.

Speaking on behalf of all the zombie lovin’ gamers out there, we want to play your game, George.
