Resident Evil Creator Launching New Studio, 3D Horror Coming?

by Tim Turi on Mar 17, 2010 at 07:30 AM

Industry veteran and father of survival horror, Shinji Mikami, is planning to start a new Tokyo-based development studio. The company will be named Tango, and it will aim to give fledgling game creators a fair shake at expressing their talent. Mikami even hints at a 3D horror project.

Mikami is looking to capitalize on Japan’s young, unproven industry talent. He expects to grow Tango up to 100 employees within five to seven years.

"One of the reasons I'm building a company is to raise the game makers of the future, people who haven't gone pro yet," Mikami said in Famitsu interview.

"I really want to make Tango a company run from a creator's perspective, one that expands upon new talent."

When he worked for Capcom, Mikami churned out critical hits like Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and of course, the Resident Evil series. He eventually went on to work for Clover Studio until it closed in 2007 at which point Mikami along with other Clover alum Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya moved on to PlatinumGames. His current project is the recently announced third-person shooter, Vanquish (check out our full preview here).

In a statement that is sure to send shivers down the spines of longtime fans of Mikami, he teased interest in making a “a true-3D horror game, something where you'd use glasses like in the Avatar film."
