Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 Expands Online, Adds Ryder Cup

by Nick Ahrens on Mar 09, 2010 at 09:42 PM

At the EA Sports "Season Opener" event, the game publisher revealed the first details about the next version of its dominating golf title. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 ups the ante in the online department with new 12 vs 12 matches molded to reflect the Ryder Cup competition. Players will have the ability to create teams with friends to compete online via both head-to-head matches and the leaderboards.

Speaking of the Ryder Cup, the team-based golf tourney makes an appearance in PGA Tour 11 as both a standalone tournament and as part of the career mode. The Ryder Cup is a unique golf competition in which the U.S. and Europe battle for bragging rights. The gameplay differs because unlike a normal game of stroke golf, the team's aggregate performance determines the winner.

While EA Sports is still hush hush on single-player components like the career mode and the Tiger Challenge, the demo provided a few other details on how the game is changing this year. Wind is now dynamic, changing in real-time with sudden gusts. The courses now have time-of-day settings that are made possible by the game's new lighting model. Even the player models have been improved, with subtle touches like cloth and hair physics. On the gameplay side, we do know that the elevation grid used during putting and chipping will now appear on the green at all times. This gives player a much better preview of their impending shot.

EA is also introducing some changes to the swing mechanics (including the mysterious focus mechanic in the screen above), but unfortunately that info will come at a later time.
