John Carmack To Be Awarded Lifetime Achievement Award

by Meagan Marie on Feb 22, 2010 at 04:31 AM

Just as with Hollywood, the award season is once again upon us. The next event looming on the horizon is the 2010 Game Developer Choice Awards, integrated into the annual Game Developers Conference.

Event details are starting to come to light, including the recipient of the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes one individual each year that has not only contributed significantly to game development throughout the years, but whose contributions have helped to shape modern video games. This year’s recipient is id Software’s John Carmack, who is being recognized for nearly two decades of technical contributions on genre-defining games such as Doom and Quake. Former Lifetime Achievement Award winners include Sid Meier, Shigeru Miyamoto and Will Wright.

“It's no exaggeration to say that John Carmack and id Software have had a monumental influence on all modern 3D games, but especially the first-person shooter genre,” says Meggan Scavio, Event Director of GDC. “John is one of the key figures in the history of video games, and we're delighted to be giving him the Lifetime Achievement award this year.”

In a second announcement we’ve learned that fellow industry-icon Warren Spector will be hosting the awards this year, following Tim Schafer’s act in 2009 and Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin the year before.

The ceremony will take place March 11 following the 2010 IGF awards. If you’re interested in the nominees up for bat in each peer-selected categories, check out the full list here.
