Disney Tucking Tail On PS3 & 360?

by Matthew Kato on Feb 10, 2010 at 08:30 AM

Despite games like Tron and racer Split Second on the horizon, Disney Interactive CEO Bob Iger says that the company is scaling back on its PS3 & Xbox 360 ambitions.

"Disney-branded [games] seem to perform better on the Nintendo Wii and DS Platforms," said Iger in a call with investors. Citing production and marketing costs, Iger says that higher-end titles are harder to succeed with (especially with the increased competition from casual titles) and that although Disney would "continue to make games for the high end, we'll be very, very judicious in how many and which ones we choose." The company is still committed to its previously announced PS3 and 360 projects.

Last year Disney purchased Marvel, and at the time the company said that it would honor the contracts that Marvel already has in place with the likes of Activision. In his call Iger briefly touched on the subject of Marvel, saying that "that's a brand we think would do extremely well on higher-end consoles."

I understand Disney's need to play to its strengths, but I hope that in the future it still takes on titles like Split Second and Pure. Disney was positioning itself to be a bigger player in console publishing, but this move seems like a retreat from that until the Marvel games show up.
