Hellgate To Be Resurrected In U.S.

by Adam Biessener on Jan 18, 2010 at 06:59 AM

Korean publisher HanbitSoft has acquired the sole rights to publish further Hellgate products in the United States, according to a statement from the company. HanbitSoft, which has little presence Stateside, ended up with most of the rights to former Flagship Studios properties Hellgate: London and Mythos in the wake of Flagship's 2008 implosion. The deal announced today removes any claim Hellgate: London publisher Namco Bandai had to the franchise, and clears the way for HanbitSoft to operate Hellgate in the U.S.

HanbitSoft recently released Hellgate: Resurrection in Korea, a revamp of the game that adds a free-to-play model to the original subscription plan. The product's success in its native territory is now prompting the publisher to move ahead with plans to bring it to American gamers in 2010.

The much-maligned Hellgate: London had a lot of promise that ultimately went unfulfilled. Perhaps the Korean team working on it today can bring some of that lost luster back, but you'll forgive me if I remain skeptical.

Either way, HanbitSoft's 2010 is off to a great start solely on the strength of including the following line in a press release: "Since October 2007, the sensational popularity of Hellgate: London has attracted many RPG gamers."

Hellgate: London's popularity was so sensational that its developer closed down for good!
