New Direction For Madden In 2010?

by Matthew Kato on Jan 12, 2010 at 05:21 AM

In a conference call discussing Electronic Arts' lowered earnings estimate for the fiscal year ending in March, company CEO John Riccitiello intimated that EA is shaking up the Madden franchise for 2010.

When talking about some of the highlights for the year, Riccitiello mentioned a few properties: "A great new Medal of Honor...Sims on consoles...and an innovative new take on Madden." Whether he was referring to a new Madden game above and beyond the traditional yearly offering or if he meant that Madden NFL 2011 was going to go in a new direction is unclear.

Personally, I think that Riccitiello is referring to a separate Madden experience apart from the regular $60 game we buy every year. Between things like the Madden NFL Arcade downloadable title (above) and the Tiger Woods Online browser game, EA has shown that it is thinking in different directions. And I believe that offering any kind of radical "new take" on the core Madden experience would be a mistake that would just alienate the longtime fans – especially risky since the series has just gotten back on its feet this past year with a playable football experience after years of missteps. Who knows, maybe EA is going to officially bring back NFL Blitz.
