EA's FIFA Killing Competition

by Matthew Kato on Jan 11, 2010 at 08:15 AM

In soccer, every goal is worth gold, and EA is bragging that it's got a quite a few up on its rival Pro Evolution from Konami.

"We continue to beat the heck out of Pro Evo," said Jens Uwe Intat, senior VP for EA Europe, "and across Europe we're talking 75 percent of the football space." As part of his evidence, Intat says that FIFA 10 has been near the top of the UK sales chart for several months after its October release (including being second to Modern Warfare 2 over Christmas), while Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 fell out of the top ten after it came out.

It's not surprising that FIFA is selling well given how the franchise has gathered steam after a poor next-gen debut. Since then, developer EA Canada has worked out the kinks, and FIFA 10 represents their best efforts. Meanwhile, Konami's Pro Evolution started out stronger because the PlayStation 3 version was more of a port using the tech from its strong run on the PS2.

Anybody, like me, enjoy both franchises? In your mind, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each series?
