Joe Mauer To Grace Cover Of MLB 10: The Show

by Adam Biessener on Dec 17, 2009 at 07:10 AM

Showing the wisdom and good judgment that makes its baseball simulator the game of choice for hardball fans, Sony is putting the best player in baseball on the cover of its 2010 edition: Joe Mauer. The Minnesota Twins catcher won the stronger (American) League's Most Valuable Player honors for the 2009 season after leading the Twins on an amazing comeback for the AL Central championship. Mauer, often referred to by Minnesotans as "the Baby Jesus" for his boyish good looks and miraculous baseball ability, is the only catcher to win an AL batting title – and he's got three on his shelf.

Unlike certain other MVP choices who play premium defensive positions, Mauer's ability on the field lives up to his reputation. If he went out of his way to make plays look hard (none of them are in fact difficult for him, of course), he would get every single Gold Glove vote from both leagues.

Traditionally, I'd ask you to weigh in on who you feel the most deserving athlete for MLB 10: The Show is in the comments. As there is no other reasonable choice in the face of Mauer's impeccable skills, I think that we can forgo that custom this time.

We'll all have the chance to observe Mauer's greatness when MLB 10: The Show comes out on March 2.

[Editor's note: The above is a true and objective look at the state of Major League Baseball today, and in no way influenced by Adam's Minnesota Twins fandom.]
