Wii Lifetime Console Numbers Blow Away PS3 In Japan

by Matthew Kato on Dec 17, 2009 at 06:08 AM

The lifetime console numbers for the Wii and PlayStation 3 have been uncovered for Japan.

Preeminent Japanese magazine Famitsu has learned that since its Japanese launch on December 2, 2006 (a couple weeks after it debuted here), Nintendo's Wii has sold 9,048,012 in that country.

On the other hand, Sony's PlayStation 3 has sold less than half that amount, shifting 4,020,563 since its November 11, 2006 debut. According to Enterbrain, this new number represents a huge jump for Sony, with the PS3 almost doubling its installed base in the country from the same time last year.

While Sony and the PS3 are clearly gaining momentum in Japan and around the world, it's a far cry from the days of the PS-X and PS2 in its native country. With the Japanese development scene being eclipsed by the west, it'll be interesting to see if Japanese developers consciously turn in the direction of the Wii for future games, and if such a move can revive Japanese studios' stature.
