Splinter Cell: Conviction Co-Op Details

by Ben Reeves on Dec 10, 2009 at 10:21 AM

We’re gearing up to slip through the shadows and snap some necks in Sam Fisher's latest outing, Splinter Cell: Conviction, but the most recent issue of Official Xbox Magazine broke details about the game’s new co-op modes, and it sounds like you might want to play through them first.

One mode ties neatly into the single-player campaign. This six-hour, four-level prologue features two characters, a Russian named Kestrel and an American named Archer. Many of the features talked about in the single-player game – such as Mark and Execute, and the last known position stealth mechanic – will be available to co-op players. In addition, there will be moments where two players can work together. For example, if one player gets grabbed by the enemy and used as a human shield, that player can elbow his capture, providing a window of opportunity for his partner to take a shot and free him.

Players looking for something with more of a deathmatch flavor will have a few options to pick through in the Deniable Ops mode. One game type, called Hunter, has players work as a unit as they take out NPCs scattered across a map. Another game type, called Infiltration, adds some extra challenge to that formula, requiring players to take out their enemies with stealth. Last Stand is a king of the hill game where players work together to protect a nuclear warhead, and, of course, there will also be a bread-and-butter versus mode called Face Off.

A demo sometime in January would certainly help us get through those long lonely winter nights. Anyone out there pumped to play some of these multiplayer modes, or are most of you more exciting for the single-player component at this point?
