NHL 10 Third Jersey Code Takes The Ice

by Matt Bertz on Dec 07, 2009 at 04:12 AM

The wait for alternate jerseys is over. Today EA Sports released the code for NHL 10 that allows players to don the third jerseys introduced this season. The teams sporting new sweaters include the Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators, and Minnesota Wild.

What took so long, you ask? The NHL has some poor scheduling and arcane rules in place for its players and jerseys appearing in video games. Unlike the NFL and NBA, rookies must first take the ice with their new team in a regulation game before the NHLPA allows EA Sports and 2K Games to put them in the game, which means young phenoms like John Tavares need to be added in a patch after the game ships. For the new jerseys, EA had to wait until they were revealed by the respective teams before it could add them into the game. Rather than introduce the new sweaters before the season so feverish fans will buy them up in anticipation for the new season and they can be included in the video games (see the NFL), the NHL teams foolishly wait until a quarter of the way through the season when no one notices because the media coverage is solely focused on the NFL playoff hunt. Good thinking!
