360 Twitter, Facebook, LastFM Update Coming November 17

by Tim Turi on Nov 12, 2009 at 06:52 AM

When you fire up your Xbox 360 to play Assassin’s Creed 2 or Left 4 Dead 2 next Tuesday, expect a system update notification. Why? It’s finally time for the long-heralded Facebook, Twitter, and LastFM to make their dashboard debut.

Mark Whitten, Xbox Live’s general manager, recently revealed the anticipated update’s November 17 release date during a chat with Fast Company. Whitten stresses that the 360 is not receiving truncated versions of the PC-based social networking services, but reimaginations tailored specifically for Microsoft’s console.

"We look at things like Facebook and Twitter as amazing social experiences, but also entertainment. We didn't want to copy and paste from the PC," Whitten explains.

"People are going to gravitate to looking at photos on the TV," Whitten continues. "It's going to be great for current users, but it's also great for new users who can see who is on Facebook and get their first 30 friends on Live."

Automatic updates of Twitter and Facebook friends with Gamertags to your Xbox Live friends list sounds like a convenient tool that could make finding online teammates a breeze. Who knows, you might soon be killing zombies with that guy who sat behind you freshman year in chemistry that you never talked to.
