Valve: High-end PC Mods Holding Back The Jump To 360

by Tim Turi on Nov 09, 2009 at 08:04 AM

Xbox Live has stood as an excellent vehicle for online multiplayer, allowing friends to play awesome multiplayer games like Left 4 Dead together. However, user-created mods have sadly been absent from the console side of things. Left 4 Dead 2 lead Chet Faliszek explains why that’s been the case, and how it could change.

"One of the problems now when you look at a lot of the mods that are made is they can't run on low-end PCs, they can't even run on mid-end PCs often - they can only run on high-end PCs. They can't run on Xbox 360," says Faliszek in an interview with CVG.

"There's a lot of work we do to get things to the performance levels that are acceptable for us,” he continues.” You look at a lot of the modders and obviously that's a very technical thing; you have to know the engine and the tools very well.”

Faliszek also says that Valve has been talking with modders, suggesting that the company may be working towards streamlining the modification process.

"The coolest thing we could ever do would be to take something that was made by the community and share it with everybody - including Xbox 360 owners.”

Considering 360 users have been missing out on cool L4D mods like Dead By Dawn, the Dawn of the Dead remake-inspired campaign, it’s heartening that Valve is even considering facilitating original content.
