Sony Online Entertainment just announced that its Denver studio is working on a 3D turn-based strategy game based on popular collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. A brief teaser trailer (viewable in the media gallery below) showing off a 3D model of the iconic Shivan Dragon accompanied the announcement.

Few details about the game have been released – we have no idea how closely it will follow the rules of the tabletop original, how it ties in with the loose fiction surrounding the card game, or even what pricing model it will use. Given SOE's recent track record and the success of FreeRealms, a microtransaction-based setup is a good bet.

Magic: The Gathering – Tactics will feature both single-player and competitive play.  Meta aspects like tournaments, achievements, and rankings will be implemented as well. The PC version is expected to be available in early 2010, with a PlayStation 3 edition coming later.
