Doom Box Artist Passes Away At 73

by Tim Turi on Nov 02, 2009 at 06:29 AM

There’s plenty of memorable box art in the history of gaming, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find PC game packaging oozing with as much nostalgia as the original Doom. Sadly, the artist of the 1993 masterpiece, Don Ivan Punchatz, died October 22nd at the age of 73 after suffering from cardiac arrest.

Why news of his passing has taken this long to make it around the internet may be confusing, but there is no question that gamers everywhere are fondly remembering his work. He also illustrated for several famous publication including Heavy Metal, Time, and Playboy.

From the first time the childhood me saw a poster of the Doom box art plastered on my cousin’s wall, the image was forever burned into my memory.  Everything is firmly wedged in my brain, from the space marine running in the background that should be shooting instead of waving, to that creepy Baron of Hell half-waving and staring at me in the lower-left corner.

Also, it was a pretty good game to boot.
