Apple’s Platforms To Drive Growth In Portable Gaming Market

by Annette Gonzalez on Oct 23, 2009 at 07:38 AM

DFC intelligence, a group of market researchers, reports that the global market for mobile and portable games will reach $11.7 billion by 2014 with growth driven primarily by the iPhone and iPod Touch. By 2014, sales for games on Apple’s platforms are expected to make up 24% of all portable game software sales, which include the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS.

“The dedicated portable game systems from companies like Nintendo and Sony are still expected to lead the market, but it appears growth for these devices has peaked. The platforms from Apple are expected to be responsible for the bulk of market growth over the next few years,” said DFC analyst David Cole.

DFC also performed a survey that explored the mobile gaming habits of 8,000 gamers in North America and Europe. Results show mobile gaming is on the up and up as 54 percent of North American respondents (69 percent in Europe) had played games on their mobile phone in the past year.

Apple has sold 20 million iPhones in fiscal 2009 with the iPod Touch in close range and sales are still strong. Do you play a lot of games on your iPhone/iPod?
