Sony Pushes EyePet Out Of Holiday Window

by Jeff Cork on Oct 06, 2009 at 06:14 AM

Sony Computer Entertainment America has officially delayed the release of EyePet from November to an unspecified new date, presumably in early 2010. The decision seems to rooted in marketing rather than from any development issues. We contacted Sony about the delay, and a representative said that the move would give the company more time to educate retailers about the product. Here's Sony's official statement:

"The North American territory has decided to take additional time to focus on the EyePet product and can confirm it will not be available this holiday.  EyePet is an innovative and exciting new IP to the PS3 platform and SCEA marketing will spend additional time to continue educating consumers and retail channels, setting the table for a successful product launch.  We will provide more details on an updated launch timeframe very soon."

EyePet, first announced at German Games Convention 2009, is an interactive pet that utilizes the PlayStation 3's EyeToy camera. The virtual creature can interact with user-created drawings and other objects, in addition to tolerating being washed and dressed in silly outfits. On the surface, it seemed like a perfect holiday title. It's approachable and well suited to families who may be attracted to the PS3's new lower price point. Then again, the game-plus-EyeToy bundle is sure to take up more shelf space than a regular release. Considering just how many other games are debuting with large peripherals this season, it might make more sense for EyePet to scamper out of the way until those other games hit the discount bins.
