Will Delayed Triple-A Titles Be Further Delayed?

by Annette Gonzalez on Sep 16, 2009 at 09:22 AM

Have you just now come to terms with the fact many of the most anticipated games of this year have been delayed until Q1 2010? Was the news so devastating that you didn't leave the house for a week and drowned your sorrows in several dozen pints of Häagen-Dazs? You may want to swallow that last sip of coffee before you read this next bit, unless you like spit-takes. An important-sounding person in the video-game industry thinks the postponed triple-A titles of early 2010 may be pushed back even further.

Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, is the man responsible for the dark prophecy. Guillemot knows this scenario too well, with Ubisoft's own Splinter Cell: Conviction's development sentence extended after its original release window of holiday 2009. The game sits among other anticipated releases such as BioShock 2, Bayonetta and Heavy Rain.

“We now have a situation where there are a lot of good games due for release in the first half of next year, but I think some publishers will move again,” says Guillemot. Publishers delaying big-budget games just so they don't have to compete with other hot titles? Pish posh.

“The first quarter of 2010 is looking pretty crazy," the CEO continues. "So I expect some movement from the other players – some of those delayed games will be moved again.”

Hopefully, Guillemot is dead wrong here. We definitely understand publishers and developers want to get the most out of their release dates, but nobody wants to wait until Q3 2012 for a game that's been done since last May.
