Blog Herding – The Best Blogs Of The Community (March 29, 2018)

by Game Informer Editorial on Mar 29, 2018 at 11:13 AM

Shenmue, Celeste, and Sea of Thieves all get time in the blogging community spotlight this week, along with the tricky topic of limited saves in games. Time to get reading!

Community Blogs For March 15 – March 28:

A Gaming Life: Pt. 2 – A 3DS Localization Wishlist
Dominic Cichocki writes about some games we desperately need to see localized for the American audience. All of these games sound really interesting, but I have a soft spot for the Monster Hunter title, because, well, Monster Hunter, and its cats rock.

(Cat) Monkey Business
I didn't realize the first line of Psydswipe's blog was going to be the opening to one of the fear-inducing horror blogs ever written. But at the very least we can find solace in the super cute cat monkey hybrid. I'm sorry for your loss, blogger.

The Other Shoe – The Problem with Limited Saves
The Prince of Snark Euphoric Ennui I is here to talk about bad ways to save games. In the past, as a young kid, I would say, "whatever." But as an adult with little time, I need to save whenever I damn well please. Plus, our blogger points out that other gamers may not have the ability to play a game for that long, and that's not fair.

GMC – A Night to Remember
Haley Shipley had a difficult time writing about a game that fit her own writing prompt. But the eloquent idea maker that is alcohol struck our writer...or rather, the act of hopping around bars. She asks, "How do you play through a night you won't forget?" I suggest you dive in and find out.

A Gaming Life: Pt. 2 – Shenmue Is Better Compared To Telltale Than GTA
I haven't ever thought of Shenmue as a GTA type of game before, but I haven't thought of it too deeply as a Telltale game, either. Dominic Cichocki's second blog is about how Sega's ambitious, flawed masterpiece is more of an adventure game than anything else.

Celeste Offers a Lesson in Accepting One's Faults
I keep seeing a lot of references to Celeste, and Refle is here to write about just why it's so good. I mean, just the fact that the main character is dealing with anxiety and depression is really interesting. He writes, "While numerous games have tackled mental health, very few of them do it as heartfelt and personal as in Celeste."

GMC: Using colors to overcome our inner selves
Brendon Curzio took on the latest Game Making Challenge, coming up with a colorful interpretation. And, wouldn't you know, Celeste is an inspiration in this post, with Curzio explaining how suffocating colors make way for softer, more appealing ones as you progress throughout the game.

Sea of Thieves Is About The Stories You Make
This new swashbuckling game seems pretty rad, and according to our blogger Irwin, it is. I mean, how cool is it to be online, on a ship, ramming into another ship, and trying to board said ship while avoiding being shark food? These moments are what make the game, but Irwin cautions that much more content is needed before it really takes off.

Why Bad Video Games Can Be Good For You
While some games like Superman 64 can never be good for anyone, there is a point to trying out games that may not be highly rated, according to Writergirl2394. She insists that some games can have some really great ideas, even if they don't find their way completely. I've found a lot of fun in games that receive mediocre or even bad scores. Heck, some "great" games can often be a letdown. Games like Mega Man X: Command Mission and Sega Soccer Slam, neither considered great, are two of my favorite games.

The Adventures of a Gamer Teacher: A Teacher Made Friend
GerardoExber is back after a month to write about life as a teacher and gamer. Basically, it's an ode to keeping up with blogging, making great friends through video games, and really, how much better can it get than some solid friendship?

The Reclaimer is my Hero
StarterPack likes Halo. Like, really, really likes it. To be fair, Halo means nothing to me after Bungie left the property. And even Destiny has been a letdown, and something I stopped playing a while ago. StarterPack's blog is much sadder to read because Bungie and Halo and even Destiny meant so much to him. For me, it's just history, I guess.

Community Reviews:

Celeste
This hit game makes the Herd for a third time this week, this time by way of Nathan Anstadt. He's fair in warning players that they will most likely die a lot, but that ultimately, this is one that needs to be played.

Writing Challenge:

Nothing this week.
