Science-Fiction Weekly – Breaking Down The New Last Jedi Footage

by Andrew Reiner on Jul 18, 2017 at 01:50 PM

Before I dive into a scene-by-scene breakdown of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi footage shown last weekend at Disney's annual expo, here is your obligatory SPOILER alert. New story points and locations are revealed in these clips, and I also lend my own theories and ideas for specific sequences that remain unclear. Just scrolling down the page and seeing some of the shots will likely reveal something you didn't see while watching the video. If you want to go into this film without knowing specific elements of the story or where the characters are at within it, turn back now – I'll see you again in seven days.

For those of you who are dying to learn more about what Rian Johnson and his crew at Lucasfim have been working on, this video offered plenty of new information. I didn't glean too much of it on my first viewing, but seeing the shots as still frames gives us a nice framework of what I believe is the majority of the film. Let's walk through it shot by shot:

This cavernous set is believed to be from Ahch-To, the planet Luke Skywalker, Rey, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 are on at the beginning of The Last Jedi.

The final moments of The Force Awakens make Ahch-To appear to be abandoned, and home only to Luke. That may not be the case. These huts are believed to be on the same planet. The question is: Are they still occupied?

An ordinary Chewbacca mask...or is it? Could the extra attention paid to his hair lead to a more regal sequence? Fans believe he may be heading to a city called Canto Bight, and more specifically, a casino where the richest of the rich gamble away their riches.

Four pristine speeders like used by the patrons of the casino.

The Millennium Falcon sits where we last saw it on Ahch-To. Chewbacca can be seen next to a fire, perhaps reflecting on the death of his friend. Given the night setting, and Rey meeting Luke during the day, why hasn't Chewbacca been reacquainted with his old friend?

We knew Finn wouldn't remain in his coma long, but it appears he doesn't waste much time getting back into the swing of things. We see him here in a pilot outfit. The lighter orange color may imply a TIE to the Y-Wing or a bomber squadron.

This is perhaps the most cryptic photo of all. We see General Leia on an unknown planet looking distressed. Some people believe she is on Crait, the planet with the red soil. Others theorize she may be visiting the survivors of planets destroyed by Starkiller Base.

We didn't expect to have this moment spoiled in the behind-the-scenes footage. Rey does indeed hand the lightsaber to Luke.

Kylo Ren apparently had a back-up helmet. He also decided to throw on a cape. Could that be Darth Vader's cape? People believe it may be, given his affection for Vader's belongings.

This appears to be a throne room. Who needs one? I'm guessing this is where Snoke hangs his hat.

A Resistance base is under attack, and...oh my...the A-wings are back!

First Order Stormtroopers with new weapons and slightly different armor....perfect for new action figures!

This adorable creature is likely penned on Canto Bight. Leaked footage from the film's development showed Finn riding one in the city's streets.

A seemingly ordinary wolf or fox-like creature, but it's fur appears to be made of crystal. What else uses a crystal? Is there a connection between this creature and the Force?

Rey is diving for something, and if a leaked image of a forthcoming Last Jedi pinball game has anything to say, it could be Luke's X-Wing on Ahch-To.

A little employee doing his job at the casino. It looks like he rounds up chips.

Admiral Hondo meeting general Leia.

Luke in a new outfit, but it appears he's still on Ahch-To.

Finn coming out of his medical chamber.

Could this be the same attack shot of the hanger with the A-wings? If so, Captain Phasma is leading the charge.

A shot of Poe sliding into a man-made trench on Crait. This image worries me more than any other. If you thought The Force Awakens borrowed too heavily from A New Hope, it appears The Last Jedi might do the same thing with The Empire Strikes Back. AT-ATs are believed to be on the opposing side in this battle. We also have the potential of a submerged X-Wing on a planet where a Force-user is being trained by an old Jedi. Let's not forget about the casino which could be this film's Cloud City-like setting.

Everyone in the casino is dressed up.

Punched by an angry wookiee or thrown with the Force?

Rose and Finn are undercover. They are likely looking for the Death Star pla...wait...that's been done already.

A new character named DJ with BB-8.

Ren is using his saber, but against who and how many?

Three against one. Uh oh. Could this be Rey taking on the Knights of Ren?

This is how general Hux gets around. Looks like a vehicle made for queen Amidala.

The background looks like the casino. Imagine playing space poker against this creature.

The casino is apparently loaded with species we haven't seen before.

This little guy is supposedly a creature named the Porg. He looks cute, but that mouth might be filled with fangs. He resides on Ahch-To.

Finn behind bars in a First Order base.

The First Order gets hit.

Poe in a Black Squadron jacket.

Something terrible happens to this mask. Crushed by the Force?

Who is falling? Are those bombs?

A beautiful shot of the casino.
