Blog Herding – The Best Blogs Of The Community (October 20, 2016)

by Game Informer Editorial on Oct 20, 2016 at 08:05 AM

This week is short and sweet – so you can enjoy some blogs and get back to gaming and writing. And before you know it, the steady stream of holiday blockbusters will be upon us. That's either good or bad, depending on your backlog (mine is now an entire hockey duffle bag under my bed, hidden away like an embarrassing secret).

Community Blogs For October 13 – October 19:

When Bad Games Do Good
Blogger Psykologic makes a great point: Sometimes games that are bad at launch become fantastic after some patching and updates. Heck, he even mentions how BioWare "fixed" Mass Effect 3's ending (which was fine the first time, for me, and really didn't change much through the update), making fans happier and keeping them loyal.

When A Soundtrack Keeps On Playing
GerardoExber knows that a good video game soundtrack can, and will, stick with you for days. I still hum video game tunes I haven't heard in nearly two decades, but such is the power of a good soundtrack. See if any of the games Gerardo praises in his blog are ones you love listening to, and then leave your favorite tunes in the comments.

Writing Challenge Responses:

Community Writing Challenge: The Best Thanksgiving Tradition Ever
When you're lucky enough to think of Thanksgiving and also think video games, then that's one mighty fine holiday tradition, Haley Shipley. I mean, how cool is it to have two TVs set up at the holiday gathering place that are used exclusively for video games?

Community Writing Challenge: Those Games To Play During Fall
The Dark Cloud 2 image sucked me into GerardoExber's blog, but the copy made me stay. While his story hits on familiar notes like college getting in the way of gaming, fall is a time for our writer to sit back, dig through the backlog, and beat some games that are starting to clutter the coffee table.

Community Writing Challenge: The Autumn Game List
Dalin Briggs' post is unique in that he has five games that makes him think and feel fall. It's a diverse list with an eclectic mix of reasons as to why they make the cut. The Mass Effect obsession is particularly fun and interesting. But as a whole, fall is a time for gaming for Briggs.

Community Reviews:

Retro Review: The Legend of Dragoon
This is one divisive RPG, but Brendon Curzio is firmly in the I-love-it camp. Some reasons why pertain to the story, characters, and even the drama of it all. I remember enjoying it when it was new on PS One, but haven't played it in years. Glad to hear it still holds up.

Community Writing Challenge:

Tell me about your favorite local multiplayer game. I recently got the chance to play Smash Bros. with a buddy on the same TV for the first time in 13 years, and it was magical. From Mario Party to Goldeneye, there are certainly some fun local multiplayer games out there – and memories and stories to match them.

Community Playdate:

I'll be gone all weekend traveling to the Fargo area, but please don't hesitate to hit me up for some Monster Hunter shenanigans. Leave a friend code in the comments, and don't be afraid to message me on Twitter or via Game Informer.

I hope you enjoy the blogs! Please contact me via my Game Informer page or on Twitter at @LouisGarcia12 with any blog news or playdate suggestions.
