Blog Herding – The Best Blogs Of The Community (March 24, 2016)

by Game Informer Editorial on Mar 24, 2016 at 06:20 AM

This week's blogs had a lot of Assassin's Creed going on when it came to things that were overrated. Aside from that, we've an eclectic mix of topics to read about, so dig in and enjoy.

Community Blogs For March 17 – March 23:

The Greatest Video Game "Period Pieces"
That Guy... writes about games that do a great job of representing the time period they take place in. I mean, when people traveled west they did get dysentery like, every other week, right? But to be perfectly serious, these games really dive into their setting and place in history. Just check out this interview I transcribed for Game Informer's Matt Miller to find out how deeply Assassin's Creed dove into pirate history. At the time I didn't even know what game was being talked about, but was excited to play it based on the depths the team went to recreate pirate history.

Bloggin' After Dark: Attraction, Romance, and Sex in Games
Thomas Loughney tackles sex in video games in his blog. More specifically, he writes about how badly portrayed sex is. While I'd argue that BioWare is finally doing a better job of representing an adult relationship, more often than not, sex in video games is just plain old silly.

Writing Challenge Responses:

Community Writing Challenge: Leon S. Kennedy: The Overrated Hero of Resident Evil
I'm a huge fan of Leon and the Resident Evil series, but GerardoExber doesn't think the boy band lookalike deserves such a lofty position in the gaming world. He makes good points. And to be honest, Jill is the real star of the Resident Evil series. She's a badass.

Community Writing Challenge: Assassins are Overrated
Cru Hunter doesn't think assassins are all that great. Okay, it's not that assassins aren't awesome (they are), it's that the Assassin's Creed clandestine stabbers aren't great characters. Perhaps that's what happens when you churn out a new game every year.

Community Writing Challenge: Top 7 Most Overrated Characters in Gaming
Blogger StarterPack goes for broke, choosing seven of the most overrated characters to appear in a virtual world. This list will be divisive. Except for Roland's inclusion. I love the Borderlands series and hate his fate in the second game, but...he isn't that interesting. Sorry, soldier.

Community Reviews:

Senran Kagura Estival Versus Review
Enuo takes readers through a game I had never heard about before. He begins by writing that the sexualized content should be ignored: There is a colorful and happy game in there. I'm still not sure I can get past the fan service, but the game does have ninjas. And ninjas are always good.

Stardew Valley Video Review
This game is all the rage lately, and Daniel Campbell takes the time to deliver us a video review. My grandfather, mother, and stepfather all farmed/farm, so this game had my attention right away. But this is a great video review, and I implore you to check it out.

Community Writing Challenge:

With VR all the rage in gaming lately, what do you think it can do for video games? Is this our biggest upgrade since 2D gave way for three dimensions? Or is it just a fad? Let the community know.

Community Playdate:

This week we'll take a hiatus from playing games. I'm going to be working on some projects throughout the weekend, but we'll have more playdates soon!

I hope you enjoy the blogs! Please contact me via my Game Informer page or on Twitter at @LouisGarcia12 with any blog news or playdate suggestions.
