Blog Herding – The Best Blogs Of The Community (May 14, 2015)

by Game Informer Editorial on May 14, 2015 at 06:00 AM

This week's E3 blogs have me thinking about what exciting games we may get very soon, but also dreading adding to my backlog. I still have Super NES games I haven't beaten. The community also did a swell job with this week's writing challenge. Now that I've read everyone's dream game blog, I would like the writers to learn to program and make them so I can throw my money their way. Seriously – our community has some very cool ideas.

And with that, let's get on to this week's blogs!

Community Blogs For May 7 – May 13:

Justin's E3 2015 Predictions
E3 is coming (cue Game of Thrones "winter is coming" memes) and Justin Mikos has a list of predictions. My favorite one is that The Last Guardian will materialize and grace my PlayStation 4's innards this year. Oh – and a Fallout 4 announcement seems imminent. I spent 116 hours in Fallout 3, so I'm both excited and terrified of this game's release.

My Big Ol' E3 Third Party Predictions
Blogger lovemeorshootme gives us more E3 predictions, this time focusing on what third-party games might make their way to announcement stages. The Doom 4 prediction has me excited; Prey 2's mention has me very, very sad. If you haven't played the first game, I suggest you give it a shot.

Quick Impressions: Splatoon Global Testfire
Jon_G took some time out of his schedule to try out Splatoon on the Wii U. The verdict? He likes it. The gameplay is described as deep thanks to some fun weaponry, and the Turf War mode provides for some variety in strategy. Now if only the Big N would give us a Wii U Chibi Robo.

My favorite games that use Asian mythology
As a huge fan of Japanese mythology, as well as the Shinto religion, I found TidusandYuna1983ZackandAerith's blog about Asian mythology to be super interesting. I'm not too versed in Chinese myths, so I enjoyed the breakdown of some used in BioWare's Jade Empire.

The Ongoing Process Of Weaning Myself Off Pre-Ordering
Rebekah doesn't like pre-ordering games willy-nilly anymore – and for good reason. Games often drop in price right away, her backlog is huge, and the financial aspect of buying so many games is sort of scary. She'll still pre-order games she really wants (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt) but is trying to hold off more often.

The Unsung Progress and Innovations of Pokémon
MightyMagikarp gives us an in-depth breakdown of Pokémon and how its multiplayer connectivity has changed over the years. It's very strange to be brought back to the time of connecting cables to Game Boys to do battle or trade a Graveler to get a Golem.

GIO Smash Bros Tournament Round 1 Results + Round 2 Details
The Super Smash Bros. tournament has completed its first round, and some matches have already overshadowed the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight. Check out the blog update for a recap of all the fisticuffs and how to join your fellow brawlers in future bouts.

Writing Challenge Responses:

Community Writing Challenge: Your Dream Game – XCOM
Paradigmthefallen writes about The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, explaining that it's almost his dream game – almost. You see, the game was originally going to be much different, but what we get in The Bureau is only some of the cool features promised in the original pitch. It's a shame, because what could have been does indeed sound like a dream come true.

Community Writing Challenge: A Halo Survival-Horror Game
Irwin529 had me at Halo. However, he goes beyond the games and novels to explore something entirely different: a survival-horror game. The idea is a Halo game that features horror like Dead Space or Alien – something that sounds insanely cool given how terrifying The Flood is.

Reader Response: Dream Game
Sam_Lincoln wants an open-world game with superheroes. It would feature RPG elements, plenty of exploration, a steady amount of upgrades, and a healthy dose of influence from X-Men tales. I'm already hitting the refresh button on Kickstarter in a desperate hope that something like this pops up so I can throw money at my monitor.

Community Writing Challenge: Dream Game – Kombat Warriors
Pestulio07 adores Mortal Kombat: Deception's Konquest mode. In it players explore a vast world to train under-established Mortal Kombat characters. It also features secrets galore, but isn't very polished. If it were brought to life as an actual game, he would call it Kombat Warriors, and it would be glorious.

Community Writing Challenge: Dream Game – Post-Apocalyptic Urban Shadow of the Colossus
Refle has made it known on his blog that he absolutely loves Shadow of the Colossus. Epic boss fights on the backs of giants has a certain appeal. But how cool would it be to get those giant-killing mechanics in a post-apocalyptic setting? One more thing: Environments would crumble as you battle giant beasts. Sold.

Community Writing Challenge:

Playing a video game solo is nice, but I'm big fan of playing with a buddy. I'm guessing some of you are as well, and I want to read about your favorite cooperative experiences! Replaying Goof Troop on the Super Nintendo with my cousin has become tradition, but I've also enjoyed plenty of other co-op experiences in games like Gears of War, Borderlands 2, and Halo. Now please tell me about yours!

Community Playdate:

This week we'll take a break from our playdate, but be on the lookout for our next one! So far we've made a giant toad face extinction in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and threw down in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. As always, I'm open to suggestions on what to play. Just comment below or send me a message or tweet!

I hope you enjoy the blogs! Please contact me via my Game Informer page or on Twitter at @LouisGarcia12 with any blog news or playdate suggestions.
